MARCEL JEAN
LES TRACES DE PAS
6 mar. - 30 apr. 2025
The Galerie Boquet is delighted to present a solo show dedicated to Marcel Jean (1900-1993), a member of the surrealist group and an art historian specializing in the movement.
Featuring numerous archives and photographs, this exhibition unveils drawings, engravings, paintings, and objects created between the 1920s and 1980s, including some rare and unseen pieces. In particular, the exhibition offers a glimpse into Marcel Jean's surrealist technical inventions: decalcomania and flottage. These works are accompanied by significant pieces from surrealist artists Remedios Varo, Oscar Dominguez, Georges Hugnet, and Yves Tanguy. All from Marcel Jean's personal collection, they reveal the strong bonds that united Marcel Jean and his surrealist friends.
From his meeting with André Breton in 1932, Marcel Jean participated in all the group's exhibitions and contributed to numerous journals and collective works. As a historian of the movement, he published several critical essays, including Histoire de la peinture surréaliste (1959), considered a reference work in the study of surrealism.
The exhibition, accompanied by a catalog, is an opportunity to rediscover the work of a rare artist, three of whose pieces were presented at the recent centennial exhibition, Surréalisme, at the Centre Pompidou.
